I’m The Book Rapport, which is a fancy way of saying I sell books, collect books, and think about books more than is probably healthy. I have a degree in academic philosophy, which means I’ve spent a lot of time worrying about meaning, truth, and why people do the things they do most of which can also be found, more efficiently, in a good book.
I believe books are strange and wonderful objects. They’re stacks of paper that somehow contain whole lives, bad ideas, good ideas, and the occasional miracle. They are, in their own quiet way, transcendental. I also believe, without apology, that the joy of books adds measurably to the joy of being alive, and I’m trying to spread some of that joy around while I'm still allowed.
I take selling books seriously. I choose them carefully, describe them honestly, and ship them as if they mattered, because they do. I’m sentimental about this work and happy to admit it. I like the small human connections that happen when one person sends a book and another receives it.
Bookselling is one of the oldest human professions. People have been passing stories, ideas, and arguments to one another for as long as we’ve been able to scratch marks onto something. I’m doing my part, as best I can. So it goes.
