Les Trophees

Paris, France: Librairie Alphonse Lemerre, 1926. Leather.

HEREDIA, José-Maria de. Les Trophées. Paris, MDCCCCXXVI [1926] 12mo. Librairie Alphonse Lemerre - Quarter black morocco over marbled paper boards; raised bands, gilt-ruled spine (heavily worn). Marbled endpapers. Title page with original tissue guard. Early 20th-century French printing of José-Maria de Heredia’s celebrated Parnassian sonnet sequence, Les Trophées, first published in 1893. This 1926 edition (MDCCCCXXVI) presents the canonical cycle in a compact French trade binding typical of the period, here executed in quarter black morocco with marbled paper boards. The text is printed in the French bibliophile tradition and retains its tissue-guarded title leaf, consistent with higher-quality press standards of early 20th-century French literary editions. Fair. Binding shows heavy wear to boards and spine, with rubbing and edge loss and significant deterioration to leather spine. Despite wear, the boards remain attached and the volume is still firmly bound overall though with some looseness at the front board hinge. Internally clean and complete except for one loose preliminary leaf at the front. Text block otherwise intact with expected age toning. No additional defects noted. From the personal collection of poet and editor J.D. "Sandy" McClatchy.
